IMDB Movie Ratings

An Excel inspired Portfolio Project

Data Analysis Project #2 – Excel

Overview

An analysis of the top 1000 IMDB movies, exploring the correlation between factors such as runtime, rating, gross and number of votes received. Upon analysis, there is a general trend that the higher the rating, the greater the number of votes received. However, the correlation between runtime and IMDB rating is less obvious, as some films are much shorter in length and are still rated very highly by IMDB users.

Results and findings

Furthermore, the graph showing gross versus IMDB rating shows little positive correlation, as movies such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens are rated under 8.0 yet has the highest gross from the top 1000 movies. Movies with a higher IMDB rating such as Shawshank redemption have a far lower gross value, but factors such as year released may be considered in the future.

All queries were made using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, and the resulting Movies Ratings data visualisation file is a culmination of queries from the data using Tableau Public. The results from SQL were copied into Excel, then later added as a data source in Tableau.
